February 4 is the nationally recognized day for world cancer, and we believe it is so important to bring awareness to our family and friends . World Cancer Day encourages the prevention, detection and treatment of all forms of cancer, in any stage, by identifying misinformation and reducing stigma. This is the 20th anniversary celebration of this day, first established at the World Cancer Summit Against Cancer for the New Millennium, originally held in Paris, France.
This year's theme is, "I Am and I Will," designed to hinder the negativity surrounded with the disease, and and the stigma that nothing can be done about cancer, and steers towards a more positive and impactful approach. The goal is to provide a different attitude and conversation directed towards the things we can do to significantly reduce illness and death caused by cancer. As a community, we need to champion healthy choices and prevention strategies, as nearly 1/3 of cancers found are preventable.
We all have the ability to make healthy impactful decisions, and taking individual responsibility for ourselves and our actions. Routine vaccinations and continuous monitoring of our body is a great start, so doing so for ourselves, as well as reminding our loved ones is crucial in prevention and leading a healthy life. Be aware of anything outside the ordinary regarding your body, as early detection can save your life.
Healthy eating is also a crucial part of prevention, and there are many recipes you can make at home that are simple and delicious. Eat to Beat is another great resource we encourage you to explore, as they work together with chefs, scientists, and other leaders to help make food a new part of the fight against cancer. Go to eattobeat.org for tasty designer recipes conceived for their cancer-fighting Angio food ingredients.
There are many resources available, it just takes making the effort. We have partnered with Cancer Center of Kansas, a local non-profit organization that specializes in the treatment of all types of cancer and blood disorders. We will be donating 10% of our sales to the Wichita Cancer Foundation, which helps cancer patients around Sedgwick county with their medical bills that aren’t covered by insurance.
We understand this can be a scary conversation, but there are resources available and support. We love you and want you to live your very best life. We invite you to come down on Tuesday, February 4 and grab a quick lunch, happy hour, or dine with us, and help support the cause. You can also donate directly to the organization by going to wichitacancerfoundation.org.
